Dr. Renée MacPhee is an Associate Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University (Departments of Kinesiology & Physical Education and Health Sciences) in Waterloo, ON, Canada. She is a founding Member of the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research & Treatment [CIPSRT]), a current member of the CIPSRT Academic, Research, Clinical Network Advisory Committee (ARCNAC), and served as the research representative on the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Technical Committee for the “Paramedic Psychological Workplace Health & Safety (PPWHS) Standard” (CSA Z1003.1) and the “Paramedic Response to the Opioid Crisis: Education and Training Across the Treatment and Care Continuum in Out-of-Hospital and Community Settings Standard” (CSA Z1650). MacPhee co-authored the seed document that served as the foundation from which the CSA PPWHS Standard (Z1003.1) was developed. She is the co-inventor of the of Ottawa Paramedic Physical Abilities Test (OPPAT), and the Executive Director of the OPPAT testing program. Recognized as a qualitative researcher, MacPhee’s expertise is in pre-hospital care settings and paramedics, with a particular focus on: physical health, injury, and mental health and well-being among Canadian paramedics; and, development and implementation of bona fide physical fitness testing parameters for the field of emergency medical services (EMS). Her publication record includes peer- reviewed journals, technical reports, book chapters, and paramedic specific professional journals, as well as over 100 presentations to scientific, professional, and lay audiences. Her work integrates frontline paramedics into, and throughout, the research process in order to produce work that effects positive and impactful changes within the paramedic profession.
